I think I'm going to be looking at keeping the traditional HD (Showa) narrow-glide front end, but upgrading it to a 39mm (from my 35mm) and adding Ohlins gas emulator tubes and a "tweak brace", and maybe a gas/hydraulic stabilizer. So unfortunately it's very counterproductive to have a bike with a suspension that's really built for "handling" or performance, as they are typically synonyms with stiff/firm ride qualities. I have a pretty beat up back, and we have terrible roads up here in many places. Going to start researching my options for taking mine up a level as well, but unfortunately I won't be looking to take it to the level you did. I'd say an S&S 124" would be the real cherry in top! I saw where you asked "well what else can I do to it?" Great info thanks! I just read through your entire build thread, love it when someone truly takes an FXR to the next level and builds one for all out real performance! I'm looking for something more "sport-bike" like, for the braking on it now and what you have actually sounds PERFECT to me. It's what caused my brother to go down and nearly die when a car pulled out in front of both of us during a ride one day a couple years ago.Ĭonversely I knew my brakes capabilities and locking points better than he did, so I was able to keep it together and upright.īut since buying my 13 Ultra it's become apparent to me that my FXR is quite under-braked for how I ride it. I like to think (at least) that I'm very in tune with my bike when riding that way, and am always cognizant of modulating proper brake pressure in a stop.īeen in a few panic braking situations and that's actually the main thing on my mind at the time. I ride very aggressively and am usually pushing the limit pretty good on my FXR. I'm a very experienced rider, and been riding my FXR for 6-7 years now. Please tell me more about your R-1 setup on the FXR.ĭid you adapt the R-1 brakes to the FXR front end, or put the whole R-1 front end on the FXR? Thinking about maybe Tokico/Brembo/Nissin multi-piston calipers and fabbing the brackets.Īnyone have any info on going with either of these routes? I know that some of them use very high performance brake equipment and that you can pick the parts up on ebay for cheap. I've been toying around with the idea of using bike calipers like I see on a lot of these custom builds these days in magazines. Basically getting turned into a serious high performance FXR street burner. It's getting an entire transformation with it's new 113" engine, new paint, tires, brakes, seat/bars, exhaust. I'm going through the entire bike this winter and going to be redoing a ton of things on it.

I know that there are tons of aftermarket options out there and plenty of good ones too. Well now after logging some miles on my new Ultra the brakes on my FXR feel like total $hit. I've always thought that the brakes on my 85 FXR were great, couldn't get any better. Well it finally happened, I guess I've finally stepped into the 21'st century (or maybe dragged is a better description).
